Essay on My Path to Public Health - 1267 Words

My interest in public health stems from my interest in healthcare. While growing up, I have seen family members suffer from maladies and were later able to, through the attentive care of the skilled physicians, enjoy life more freely. As a high school student, I enjoyed different science courses from Advanced Topic Biology, Health, and Human Diseases to Medical Diagnosis, Genetics, and AP Psychology. I was in awe at the way our body worked, how our body is so strong, and yet so vulnerable. During the beginning of my undergraduate study, I majored in Biology and took Pre-Professional Medicine courses in order to study more about our body and the mechanisms that occur inside of us. When I transferred to NYU, I changed my major to economics†¦show more content†¦Currently, I work for both Dr. Martha Radford and Dr. Michael Phillips as a Clinical Quality and Effectiveness staff at NYU Langone Medical Center. My main responsibility is to analyze clinical data from databases, such as UHC Clinical Data Base and DSS, and to build reports analyzing the different aspects of hospital operations. Practitioners can then utilize these evaluations to achieve safer and better care. I also independently make systematic observations of hand hygiene opportunities at the hospital. By being informed of instances where the hand hygiene opportunities were not observed or where the rate of proper hand hygiene is low, practitioners can help prevent further spread of diseases. Working at NYULMC has fully convinced me that a public health education is necessary because public health supplements clinical medicine: it focuses on the population first in order to better focus on individuals, to help further prevent and cure illnesses. By understanding what is happening, what are the determinants, and what are the aspects that can be improved on to ensure better patient experience on the population and individual levels, practitioners can lower undesirable outcome counts. As an undergraduate at NYU, my education did not focus specifically on public health. Although I do have some background in the healthcare field, my experience was more related to clinical medicine where interaction with the patients was a main component. The Impact Of Race On The Gender Wage Gap And Women Overall

Equality of wages in America is of high concern and has been for a long period of time. On no account of America’s history, have women and men’s wages ever been equal, rather they have always had a significant gap between them. This has seen women as undervalued, causing a lot of discrimination and hardship in the workplace for women. Especially for women of color the wage gap is even larger. The pay gap in America affects women of all ages, races, and education levels but what can they do to close it? â€Å"What is the impact on race on the gender wage gap and women overall† is a topic everyone should be informed. Many people will agree because there’s a lot going on about double standards. Since the 1920’s women have been put after men. â€Å"Now in modern times, the realization that men and women can produce the same results, have the same education, and have the same capacity to accomplish the same overall tasks as men is becoming more popular† (Varnell)1. People are starting to realize that women can accomplish the same things as men but they still don’t get their recognition. Gender inequality seems to have more problems in the workplace. The gender pay gap has been an issue forever. Wage discrimination exists when workers are equally qualified and perform the same work but one group of workers is paid more than another. â€Å"The American Association University of Women is releasing a new study that shows when men and women attend the same kind of college, pick the same major and accept the same kind of job, on average, the woman will still earn 82 cents to every dollar that a man earns† (Coleman)1. The pay gap is even greater for African-American and Latina women. African-American women earning 64 cents and Latina women earning 56 cents for every dollar earned by a white non-Hispanic man. Of course it’s a racial issue because the caucasians have always been the superior race. Ref (www.who.int) Health differs from fitness in that health is just to have well being and for your mind and body to function properly, fitness is the ability to do this with vigour and without fatigue. So some one who is fit may be healthier as they are in a better state of mind and those organs i.e. the heart work more efficiently, and can deal with daily stresses more easily, without fatigue so they have energy for leisure time activities. Task Two Anaerobic fitness refers to activities which require high intensity and short duration. During aerobic activity stored fuels such as glycogen provide energy at a fast rate without the need for oxygen. The system that helps provide the energy for anaerobic activity is called the ATP-PC system. ATP is broken down to give adenosine diphosphate, a free phosphate and energy which is used for muscular work Ref (Sport and P.E) In order for this system to continue to work ATP needs to be resynthesised from ADP to ATP, this is done through the breakdown of phosphocreatine which provides a third phosphate and energy to resynthesise ATP. The most important feature of this system is the speed in which ATP can be resynthesised through PC; this is why the system is used for very intense activity. The main drawback to this system is that there are only limited stores of ATP and PC in the muscles and is restricted to a short duration. . . no longer sustain ATP resynthesis. This usually occurs after 8 10 seconds of maximum effort. Ref (Sport and P.E) However an athlete can improve their aerobic fitness and withstand the onset of fatigue by increasing stores of ATP and PC in the muscles. This can be done using various types of training, an example is pyramid training this is a form of multiple set training in which the weight is increased in each set and the repetitions are reduced. Ref (The Complete Guide to Strength Training.) This allows you to warm up the muscles gradually and prepare it to cope with heavier weights by the end of the sets; this allows the muscles to achieve overload and allowing the muscle to develop in size and strength. Another type of training that will help increase anaerobic fitness is interval training. .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 , .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 .postImageUrl , .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 , .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983:hover , .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983:visited , .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983:active { border:0!important; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983:active , .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983 .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7e1e2087dac8d198ebe2388fb1123983:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Literacy Narrative Essay In order for the correct system to be stressed you need to work for the correct duration for the ATP-PC system the work period should last for 3-10 seconds Ref (Sport and P.E.) The ways in which leadership is presented in the play Julius Caesar Essay Example For Students

The ways in which leadership is presented in the play Julius Caesar Essay Leadership is one of the main themes presented in the play and is presented though the four characters: Cassius, Brutus, Mark Antony, and Caesar. Shakespeare calls the play Julius Caesar but I feel all the four characters have an equivalent part in the play. It is unusual for Shakespeare to kill the person who the play is named after so early on in the play, so it is very unexpected when Julius Caesar is killed in Act Three Scene One. All these main characters share similar leadership traits. The four leaders that Shakespeare presents all have flaws but I think what Shakespeare is trying to illustrate to the audience is that if we mixed up all the good points of all these four characters we would get a perfect leader. I feel the way Shakespeare has presented the leadership of Brutus is the most significant and effective in contrast to the other leaders. I feel that Shakespeare empathizes with Brutus because he awards him a noble death. Brutuss firm optimism is both his supreme asset and his most fatal flaw. We will write a custom essay on The ways in which leadership is presented in the play Julius Caesar specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now He loves Rome too much and this allows cassius to persuade him to join the conspirators, and Brutuss lack of awareness prevents him from seeing what Cassiuss real motives are. What is it that you would impart to me? If it be aught toward the general good, This shows that Brutus is prepared to listen to anything Cassius has to declare as long as it is for the good of Rome. This shows that Brutus is persuaded easily when the good of Rome is mentioned. Brutus feels that if Caesar continues to be the leader of Rome then Rome will be run under dictatorship and Brutus feels that something must be done before this can happen (I. . Caesar has to be killed. ) This is Brutuss imperfection and is not a good feature of a leader. Contrasting with Brutus, Caesar is steady and cannot be persuaded easily. This is shown when the conspirators try to persuade Caesar to free Publius Cimber by flattering him but Caesar remains as constant as the northern star. I feel that this is a good quality of a leader, to be constant and to not be persuaded easily. Cassius and Mark Antony are similar to Caesar because they are not persuaded easily. Mark Antonys firmness is shown in Act four Scene one, when he condemns the conspirators and their relations to death, he does not consider eliminating Publius, his sisters son. Instead he damns him with a spot. Cassiuss rigidity is shown when he refuses to give up, when persuading Brutus towards the beginning of the play, but towards the end of the play Cassius appears to always give in to Brutus. Cassius has a very influential nature. He cunningly leads Brutus to believe that Caesar has become too powerful and must die. Cassius uses his friendship with Brutus to get what he wants. Cassius has no illusions about the way the political world works. He is a smart speculator and he proves to be successful when he manages to persuade Brutus but he lacks honesty. This is shown in the play when he forges some letters pretending that they are from the plebeians, telling Brutus that he should kill Caesar and they, the people of Rome will support him. This demonstrates that Cassius will even deceive his own friend and use dishonest means to get what he desires. Brutus is an idealist and he is guided by his conflicting emotions this is shown when he is contemplating whether to kill Caesar or to remain loyal to him, he faces a hardship but decides to assist the public good by killing Caesar in order to avoid tyranny. He lacks confidence and ambition and this is illustrated with the fact that he does not lead the conspiracy but he takes part in it. He loves honour more than he fears death because he is not afraid of getting killed for murdering Caesar; instead he is concerned about being honoured for doing his finest for his country. Brutus is not a very persuasive character and also appears to not be a very good orator because he does not appeal to the crowd. Contrasting with Brutus, Antony on the other hand manages to win the crowd over by his powerful speech; this shows a good influential quality of a leader. Antony is similar to Cassius because they both have a persuasive nature. Antony illustrates this nature by winning the crowd over. Cassiuss persuasive nature is shown when he persuades Brutus to join the conspirators. Antony and Cassius are similar also in the way that they speak because they both appeal to the person that they are speaking to. Antony appeals to the crowds greed and Cassius appeals to Brutuss love for the public good. When Antony says: Tis his will Let but the commoners hear this testament. He interests the plebeians and then additionally he says: I do not mean to read. This technique of withholding information and then telling the crowd how they should feel, rouses them and makes them desperate to want to hear what the will declares. At this point Shakespeare makes it clear to the audience that Antony has appealed to the crowds better nature and has successfully won them over. .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b , .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b .postImageUrl , .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b , .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b:hover , .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b:visited , .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b:active { border:0!important; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b:active , .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1cac64d58e35e21b7a80509058a7010b:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Male Representation in the Two Film Versions of the Play 'Romeo ; Juliet' EssayAlso when Cassius sends Brutus the forged letters claiming that they are from the plebeians, Brutus is utterly convinced that the plebeians also believe that eradicating Caesar will be for the public good. Brutus is loved by his servant, his wife and Cassius. Brutus is a respected person so the conspirators want to use him as a figurehead as part of the conspiracy. Brutus has the main qualities of a good leader, he is loved, respected and followed and he cares about the public good. His bad Characteristics are that he allows his emotions to get the better of him and he is not politically astute. He is persuaded easily when the public good of Rome is mentioned. Unlike Caesar, Brutus is able to separate entirely his public life from his private life, by giving his main concern to the matters of Rome. Cassius does not like arguing with Brutus, he is eager for affection not power unlike Caesar who is power hungry. Cassius is resentful of the fact that Caesar loves Brutus and not him. Cassius and Caesar are not sympathetic so they are similar in this way. Caesar is not sympathetic because he condemned Flavius and Marullus to death for speaking against him. Cassius is not sympathetic because he has no self-conflicts about killing Caesar. I feel that the only character that is sympathetic is Brutus. He is the only one that has inner turmoil and is confused. Mark Antony unlike Brutus is also an unsympathetic character in the play. This is clearly shown when Antony says: These many then shall die; their names are pricked. I feel to be sympathetic is a good quality of a leader and this characteristic makes a leader loved by their public. At the beginning of the play Antonys Character is different. Antony does not appear to be very politic instead his character is presented as a fun person who loves music. He seems to be a compassionate, committed friend to Caesar but after Caesars death he changes and appears to be malicious. He is so full of loathing that his character changes entirely and Antony becomes more controlling towards the end of the play. Antony appears callous, without feeling. He is prepared to cut the money that Caesar left for the people in his will. This is shown when he says to Lepidus: To cut of some charge in legacies This proves that Mark Antony is insincere because at first he uses the will to win the crowd over and when he wins them over he does not give them the money that he promised. At this point the audience know Mark Antonys character has altered for the worse. To make unfilled promises is a bad trait of a leader because the crowd could go in opposition to Antony for doing this. Towards the end of the play Antonys character appears child like because he wants to push Lepidus out of favour, and this is shown when he describes Lepidus as a slight ummeritable man. This shows that Antony only wants to share the power with Octavius only and not Lepidus because Octavius is the nephew of Caesar whereas Lepidus is of no relation to Caesar. This desire to eliminate Lepidus hints at Antonys own ambitious nature. The following quotation shows exactly how Antony feels, The three-fold world divided, he should stand One of the three to share it? Antony thinks that he can influence Octavius to follow and pay attention to him but Octavius is shrewder than Antony thought he was. Antony and Lepidus are not getting along and are having disagreements because Antony does not like the way Octavius is ruling. This is a sign of disorder due to the death of their leader, Caesar who the audience believe was an equal to god. Another sign of chaos is shown when Brutus and Cassius have a quarrel, which becomes greater. This rift is clearly shown when Cassius says: Revenge yourselves alone on Cassius For Cassius is aweary of the world: Hated by one he loves; braved by his brother; An additional sign of havoc is shown with the disagreement between Antony and Octavius. When Antony says, Octavius I have seen more days then you this shows that he is trying to gain control and he feels he should decide who should work alongside him and Octavius but Octavius knows that he is the leader and replies Antony be saying hes a tried and valiant soldier. Octavius Caesar is similar to Caesar in this way because he retains his position as the authoritative figure. Octavius is called Caesar towards the end of the play and this shows that he has managed to preserve his commanding position of the next leader after Caesar. .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 , .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 .postImageUrl , .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 , .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1:hover , .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1:visited , .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1:active { border:0!important; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1:active , .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1 .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1bf3ea66f30a34c18af8312012bbc1b1:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: William Shakespeare's Macbeth is a play in which EssayCaesar is the main leader in the play even though he dies quite early. When he dies the Elizabethan audience would not feel sorry for him because of the way his character is presented in the play, as an arrogant leader and he is over ambitious. His flaw is that he cannot separate his public life from his private life and he is hooked on the idea of the plebeians worshiping him. He ignores ill omens and threats against his life as this superstition would appear as a weakness against him. Caesar appears as two different characters. He had two sides to him, the side that he shows the plebeians is the brave and caring leader, but the conspirators come in contact with his other side, which is arrogant and ambitious. He does not allow the people to realise what he really is like and how power hungry he really is. He refuses the crown which is presented to him by Mark Antony, three times, to show the crowd how certain things do not matter to him and this is done in front of the plebeians. Cassius is a good judge of character like Caesar and he knows what the real Caesar is like. He also knows how, with great difficulty Caesar refused the crown. Cassius uses anecdotes about his encounters with Caesar to persuade Brutus to be part of the conspiracy. He says: Ay and that tongue of his, that bade the Romans Mark him and write his speeches in their books, Alas it cried; give me some drink Titinius, As a sick girl, This shows that he has seen a different side to Caesar and he believes that Caesar should not Get the start of the majestic world And bear the palm alone. Caesar thinks that Cassius is a great observer and Cassius shows this quality and so this shows that Caesar is also like Cassius a good judge of character. I feel this is a good quality of a leader. Brutus unlike Caesar and Cassius is not a good judge of character and is naive in this sense. Brutuss commitment to principle repeatedly leads him to make miscalculations: wanting to avoid violence, Brutus ignores Cassiuss suggestion that the conspirators should kill Antony as well as Caesar. In another moment of ignorant optimism, he ignores Cassiuss advice and allows Antony to speak a funeral oration over Caesars body. As a result, Brutus loses the authority of having the last word on the murder and thus allows Antony to rouse the plebeians to riot against him and the other conspirators. Brutus dies a noble death, he kills himself and when he dies Antony entitles him as the noblest Roman of them all Cassiuss death contrasts this because Cassius dies accidentally due to some misjudgement. This shows the difference in position between Cassius and Brutus. Even though Brutus was not politically astute he deserved a noble death because he had the right purpose and Shakespeare presents his character to the audience as a good person. Caesar is killed but his significance is preserved even after he is dead. This is shown when his ghost appears and relates the play back to Caesar. This is a technique that Shakespeare uses to remind the audience who the play is about. All the characters that present leadership have imperfections. Caesar cannot separate his private life from his public life unlike Brutus who puts his priorities first. Brutus has self-conflict and cares too much about the public good. Contrasting with Brutus, Cassius just wants to get rid of Caesar because he does not like the idea of Caesar appearing godlike in the eyes of the crowd. He does not care about the public good and is not afraid to use his friendship with Brutus to get what he wants. Mark Antony is a loyal and caring friend towards Caesar but when Caesar dies he becomes vengeful and cannot see beyond avenging Caesars death. Caesar, Cassius and Mark Antony are all similar because they are not sympathetic characters, whereas Brutus is sympathetic. I feel all the leaders have good features but none of them are perfect as leaders. I feel that Brutus is not politically astute and due to this he makes many miscalculations. Brutus is respected in the play and has a certain position of superiority. This is what would make Brutus a good leader. Brutus is not very persuasive because he fails to appeal to the crowd. Contrasting this Mark Antony is very persuasive as he manages to win the crowd over. Caesar is the main leader in the play but he dies quite early. He reappears as a ghost. This shows that even though he is dead, he still manages to have an effect on Brutus. The fact that Octavius has the last say in the play shows that he is the next leader. I feel that the audience is sympathetic towards Brutus because of his conflicting emotions and confusion. Brutus dies nobly shows that he deserved a noble death because he wanted the best for Rome. Brutus only committed murder because he thought killing Caesar would assist Rome.

Delegation and Empowerment Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Delegation and Empowerment - Essay Example When handled properly, delegating and empowering can enable the ordinary worker to excel to the limits of their competence. Because delegation is necessary for a manager to accomplish his job it is a vital component of a successful organization. Health care organizations are especially aided by delegation and are able to maximize the use of their limited human capital. Knowledge and information may reside in only a few key positions. By delegating authority, while remaining accountable, the manager can delegate key tasks to other qualified personnel. This is even more important where there may be a shortage of doctors or nurses. By utilizing all the workers to the maximum of their ability, the organizational structure is strengthened. Delegation is a formal process of planning, preparing, auditing, and feedback (Allen, 1998). The supervisor must communicate fully with the worker in regards to the expectations and time frames. The results of the delegation need to be monitored regularly and the worker needs to receive regular feedback or appreciation (Allen, 1998). Delegation empowers the worker with the authority of the supervisor. Empowerment can also come from a company culture that is not derived from delegation.

Why Business Law is significant and how it impacts our lives Essay

Why Business Law is significant and how it impacts our lives - Essay Example Laws are mainly formulated by the governments and also as a result of court decisions. That is, when a particular form of human activity is carried out by a group of people, there will be inconsistencies as well as violations, which could negatively affect the group themselves as well as other stakeholders including other groups or individuals. To prevent those issues, governments has come up with certain standard rules and regulations in the form of laws on how to carry out the human activity positively without negative impacts on the people. This is quite applicable to the key human activity of businesses because its survival and success mainly depends on how it treats or manages or entices its consumer. So, business laws relating to consumer care are the main laws, which maximally impact our lives. Each business law will stipulate the organizations on how to manufacture the products, on how to pack it, on how to market it or sell it, etc, etc. Although, each organization will have unique and different manufacturing processes, the basic point, is they need to follow certain laws as well as standards stipulated by the laws to ensure that the manufactured goods or offered service is of optimum quality and without any risks to the consumer. However, if there are any faults in the product or service after it reaches the consumer, due to faults or deficiency in any aspect of the organizational functioning, then also those business laws can be used by the affected consumer in the court of law. The laws can be used to get a simple apology to getting apt replacement for the deficient product or even financial compensation. Thus, it is clear that business laws maximally impacts our lives in a positive and helpful manner. Actually, the governments and other authorities will come up with laws including business laws based on common good, and it will be available to us all the time.

Job stress to job performance Essay Example for Free

Job stress to job performance Essay The thesis selected for my critique which is called â€Å"A Study on Job Stress to Job Performance: Counseling as a Moderator† was written by Tseng, Yu-man in 2013. The thesis was done by a partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Human Resource Management. It can be discovered on the Electronic Thesis Harvestable and Extensible System of National Sun Yat-Sen University. In this article, the overview of the thesis will be simply described followed by the critique on the research design and data analysis. A terse paragraph on the overall impressions will also be comprised with possible suggestions made in the conclusion part. Overview of the research thesis: In the thesis, the author intended to understand the relationship between job stress and job performance. According to the relationship, she explored â€Å"Is consultant a moderator between job stress and job performance. † She also examined â€Å"Is the personal demographic information as an obvious difference between job stress and job performance. † Quantitative method was applied and data was collected from the questionnaire survey. Furthermore, the thesis used some statistic method in this research, such as conducting the poll through questionnaires, factor analysis, descriptive statistic, T test, ANOVA, correlation analysis, regression analysis. However, unfortunately, there is no information to demonstrate if the consultant as a moderator between job stress and job performance. The author suggested backward researcher can apply ink to paper or depth interview more when doing questionnaire design. The results indicated that: 1. Job stress and job performance have statistically negative relationship. 2. There is no answer about if the consultant as a moderator between job stress and job performance. No one has the experience of seeking the consultant in the retrieved questionnaire materials. Therefore, it is unable to learn if the consultant as a moderator between job stress and job performance. 3. Marriage has an influential effect in the relationship between job stress and job performance. Other personal demographic information, such as gender, age, schooling record, seniority and current position within company, do not have significant difference in the relationship between job stress and job performance. Critique of the research design: (a) Problem statement/ introduction part: The introduction part consists of the pressures among our daily life and how it affects us to become stressful that threaten our lives. This is because there are differences between pressures and stresses. Pressures come from external, but stresses generate from internal. The author states particularly and precisely the causal relationships of pressures and stresses. First, she brought out a concept that suicide is a serious philosophic problem. It leads out another concept that â€Å"Should we struggle to survive? † Then, she used lots of instances for demonstration. Lastly, she said there will be less ill effects if we have moderate ways to relax when we have pressures and stresses. The author seems to have missed out specifying what the right behaviors are for releasing our pressures and stresses. This is noteworthy to tell the readers that some people relax in bad behaviors such as smoking which can produce a more aggravated problem than pressures and stresses. (b) Literature review of the study: In the literature review section of this thesis, the content is discussed systematically in the following arrangement: stress; job stress; job performance; the relationship between job stress and job performance; and consultative. The literatures represented exhaustive and related to the themes of study. The literature reviews have a few strengths that help the readers understand the contents easily. The contents described deeply with different types of diagrams appropriately. For example, it mentioned the scholars have lots of views in different years, it shows there are frequent changes in the definitions of the terms each year. Moreover, it used descriptive statistic to analyze the factors precisely. However, there are some improvements needed in the areas. It seems to be a little bit unbalanced in defining all the terms. Here are some suggestions for improvement. First, it depicted a lot in each factor of stress, job stress and job performance. The thesis is mainly focused on the relationship between job stress and job performance, but the literature reviews depicted the relationship in a very simple manner. There should be more information with instances to analyze the relationship. Therefore, the reliability of the investigation will be increased and the persuasiveness will also be enhanced. (c) Methodology of the study: The research was to investigate the practical states of the variables among the research subjects. The research subjects are the employees of manufacturing and service industry. Therefore, the author used a questionnaires method to handle the research. Firstly, she constructed the research frameworks. Secondly, she set up the research assumptions after the research frameworks. She also confirms the operational definitions and ponders what should be used as the instrument. In the first phrase, the research frameworks set up a framework of the relation between job stress and job performance, also with the other factor of counseling. Then, the research assumptions set up two assumptions as the relativity assumption and diverseness assumption. For the relativity assumption, the author assumed that there is an obvious correlation and consultant as a moderator has an influential effect in the relationship between job stress and job performance. For the diverseness assumption, the author assumed that sex, age, marriage, level of education, years of service and current duty have variant effect in the relationship between job stress and job performance. In the second phrase, the research design has used factor analysis, correlation analysis and regression analysis in operational definition, job stress measurement table and job performance measurement table among job stress, job performance and counseling. For job stress, the author used Strees’s theory (1988) which believes a person will have job stress when facing some threats from job. Also, she used the measurement table with 32 questions in 5-point likert scale: always, often, sometimes, seldom and never, published by Institute of Occupational Safety and Health in Council of Labor Affairs in 1995 to measure. For job performance, the author used Campbell’s theory (1987) which believes that job performance related to the process when a person who has the willingness to help the organization to accomplish the goals. Moreover, she used the measurement table with 24 questions in 5-point likert scale: very agree, agree, no opinion, disagree and very disagree, adopted from Yu Dak Shing’s translation with minor amendments that published by Motowidlo Van Scotter (1994) Task Performance Questionnaire the Task Performance Questionnaire (TPQ) and contextual performance questionnaire (Contextual Performance Questionnaire, CPQ) to measure. For counseling, the author defined it in a psychological perspective that a person will use the personal information to understand himself or herself and make improvements in adapting to the new environments. In addition, she used a revised measurement table with reference to Taiwan Tobacco Liquor Corporation. However, it is a doubt whether the research design can obtain the results clearly and reliably. This is because the measurement tables do not show an obvious correlation between job stress and job performance. This will make up some errors. Moreover, the author does not mention the amounts of research subjects. To increase the reliability and preciseness, the author should mention the amounts of research subjects and its responsiveness. Also, she should find more references for making the measurement table in an obvious relationship. (d) Discussion and Conclusion of the Study: In the discussion section, results were interpreted and possible explanations were given. The significance of the investigations is very low because the sample size is restricted. This has been substantiated by the researcher’s discussion that most of the factors (job stress and job performance) do not consist of any correlation with counseling. The researcher should ameliorate the methodology especially sampling. The conclusion was highly dwelt as the researcher defined it into 6 parts of different data. However, most of them did not show any correlation with each other. Therefore, the researcher’s efforts were useless. Conclusion: Overall, this research study gives us a good view on the current situation of the extent on â€Å"Job Stress to Job Performance: Counseling as a Moderator† in Taiwan. It provides extended review on both international and local literatures. The data and analysis were represented in a systematic and intelligible way so that readers can effortlessly comprehend. However, the collected data involved a broad range of different factors for examining the effects in the relationship. It should be expressed more clearly in some definitions. Otherwise, the meaning of the sentence may sometimes confuse people‘s understanding. Reference: Tseng, Yu-man (2009). A Study on Job Stress to Job Performance:Counseling as a Moderator. Indochina :: History

Indochina Indochina is made up of Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It was colonized by the French in the late 1800's and given up in 1939. Japan tookover France’s loss after that. After Japan’s defeat in 1945, Vietnam’s patriot and communist, Ho Chi Minh and his Viet Minh declared Vietnam independent. After that, France came to claim their loss. The US supported France fearing the "Domino Theory" would take affect after in 1949 China fell to communism. In 1950, the US sent troops to South Korea to prevent the dominos from falling. The Vietnamese took fort Dien Bien Phoo in May of 1954, so then the French finally pulled out. That set up 2 nations North Vietnam and South Vietnam split at the 17th parallel. Ho Chi Minh was in the North and was a Communist Ngo Dinh Diem was in South and disliked communism. He argued that if there was an election to choose a leader of 1 unified nation, that Ho would not permit fair elections. Viet Cong Rebellion In 1956, Diem closed all elections, and appointed local officials. That gave him less of support. Also he didn’t win the support of the peasants, that was a major mistake... in the south Vietminh members who were located in South Vietnam formed their own communist party. Diem called them the Viet Cong meaning Vietnamese Communists. North Vietnam supported the rebellion in the early parts. In 1959 the Vietminh set up a supply route to South Vietnam through Laos and Cambodia. They were then named the Ho Chi Minh trail. Also in 1959, the first American advisors were killed during a battle. By 1960 the Vietcong had about 10,000 troops and were threatening to overthrow Diem. Then the US sent 15,100(WorldBook) more US advisors in from 1961 - 1963. The Buddhist’s also had a hard time with Diem, they felt he did not give enough religious freedom. The Buddhists also held the better part of Vietnam’s population. On June 21, 1963, an old Buddhist Monk Quang Duc lit himself on fire as a form of protest. Diem who was a Roman Catholic and his brother, performed massive arrests on Buddhists and raided Buddhist temples. Kennedy urged Diem to improve relationships with Diem, but he didn’t take his offering. Then a group of generals who were against Diem formed. On Nov. 1, 1963, the generals overthrew Diem and his brother, and Diem and Nhu were murdered.

Pay for Time Not Worked

The average hourly rated full-time employee makes about $33,000 a year in year. Which broken down to all the time given off, only actually earns about $26,000. As for the employees which are paid through set salaries, the average Individual makes about $40,000 In which only about $33,000 Is worked productively. As we can see, we are losing out about $7,000 per employee, hourly or not. All the given non-productive is the same for all employees across the board. As you can see, this issue needs to be addressed and hence my recommendations. We have 60 employees in our corporate office. On average, we lose out on about $420,000. 00 a year. We can definitely cut back on some of these non-productive hours and start making them profitable. All employees get 10 days vacation, we can change our probation period from 90 to 120 days, and employees are not allowed to take any time off until they have successfully surpassed 6 months. Furthermore, depending on your start date with the company, we c an prorate the amount of vacation time allowed. If you commence In the months of November or December, vacation does not apply being that we go by the calendar year.In regards to holidays, we can exclude from having he day after Thanksgiving off, this would save us about $9500. 00 for this one day alone and it would increase our productivity during the holiday season which can be very beneficial in our case being that property management companies always have tenants calling into the office right before a major holiday. Moreover, company policy states that there should be 10 days of training for every department. Nevertheless, the training period of 10 days does not need to apply to everyone. I believe that some procedures can be learned in one week as opposed to two.Training policies should be adjusted depending on department and position. Anyone who Is eager to learn can do it in the allotted time and If this is not the case, other individuals need to be seeded especially If the p osition Is not entry level. Lastly, another aspect of â€Å"non-productive time† which can be reduced Is the minutes on the coffee break. There are currently two dally coffee breaks which are 15 minutes each. We can reduce them to 10 minutes or 5 minutes each and the caffeine addicts would nave no Dados to complain . We would a Know Tanat people are at tenet ease longer Duty enjoying their coffee at the same time.In conclusion, non-productive time can be educed in a manner that will benefit the company but no upset the employees at the same time. The economy right now is a tough one and no one wants to be out of a Job or get their hours cut back because we all have bills to pay every month. The proposed changes are both realistic and possible. It is Just a matter of presenting it to the employees in a manner in which they understand is needed for the company and beneficial. We can always make comparisons with other companies who have it worse than we do and this would help th em see that less non-productive time is better than no non-productive time.

Juvenile Delinquency in the United States - 1585 Words

Juvenile Crime Statistics Wendy R Swartz Keiser University Abstract: In this document, the topic of juvenile delinquency in the United States is thoroughly examined. Approximately 1.5 million minors (those are citizens who are under the age of 18) are arrested for criminal activity each year in the US. These juveniles are arrested for a variety of crimes; everything from petty vandalism and loitering to prostitution, drug dealing, and even murder. Of these, 70% of offenders will be tried and sentenced in juvenile courts, but the other 30% will be tried and then punished as though they were adults. A great number of these youths will turn into life-long criminals if some sort of intervention is not conducted to retard their likelihood to recommit. Punishment for juvenile offenders is usually a state issue rather than a federal one. This is a problem because it means that crimes are not universally punished nor are they punished by the same means and with the same severity. As the country grows and the population numbers increase, juvenile criminality b ecomes more pressing of a problem. Communities need to reevaluate the current youthful crime programs that they have and try to reform the minor members of their society before they become part of the statistics. In the United States, people who commit crimes are punished, no matter what their gender, race, or age.
